Asia-Pacific Media Alliance for Social Awareness

(‘The Media Alliance’) is a newly established Asia-Pacific based media initiative for building public awareness on social development issues and achieving behavior change.

In a period of global uncertainty, there is a clear and immediate need for increased and improved communications and message dissemination on issues relating to climate change, health pandemics, economic and employment uncertainty, and peace and stability. The media provides the most effective channels of information to reach and influence the widest audiences. The potential role of the media in the Asia-Pacific region in raising public knowledge and understanding of climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster prevention and preparedness, protection of the natural environment, labor rights, health and nutrition, and sustainable development is tremendous.

By raising awareness of these and other issues, the media can also help to combat poverty, HIV/AIDS and other pandemics, and contribute to the social advancement of developing countries. The Media Alliance recognizes the important role that the media industry plays in informing and influencing audiences, changing behavior and combating social challenges.

To achieve these objectives, The Media Alliance is building a multi-sector partnership of international, regional and national stakeholders. These include broadcasters, print and online media, advertising and creative agencies, and media service companies who contribute in-kind creative and production services, advertising and/or editorial space for the distribution of pro-social and public service awareness content on critical social issues. Multi-lateral institutions, non-governmental organizations, foundations, charities, corporations, and other international organizations participate in the identification of issues, provide expertise, knowledge and best practices, and supply the funding for the awareness and behavior change campaigns.
